Thursday 13th May 2010
This week was our annual ’Resolutions’ meeting, when an important subject that the W I feels needs attention by the government.. is are put forward on behalf of the W I countrywide, months beforehand we are given the opportunity to vote for a specific item, of course in South Yorkshire there was a very strong feeling for the problems of flooding, but as it was a local rather than national problem it unfortunately did not get through. The resolution for this year is for ‘The mandatory clear labelling of food with true country of origin’. It is a very popular choice, especially as many housewives are in favour of buying ‘British’. So it’s not the most exciting of meetings and even with the temptation of ‘Cream Cakes’ we still do not get a full house. But we had a good number and we enjoyed the quiz with tea and cake, after all the speeches. We must remember that over the years these ‘Resolutions’ have been in the national interest and have made an impact, the most shining example must be the plastic carrier bags, how many of us now take our own re-useable bags to the supermarket? How could any government ignore the power of so many enthusiastic women. We also learned that back in April one of our members had been to ‘No 10 ‘ to receive a special award from Gordon Brown, due to all her good works, we are very proud of our member Mrs Cynthia Shaw. The competition was an item from World War 2; the winner was Winnie Weldon, second Jennifer Brunskill and third Pam Cooper.
Saturday 15th May saw a group of our W I visit the Lamp Room theatre in Barnsley for the musical Carousel.
Well there’ll be more excitement at our next meeting in June, when it’s a hands-on handicraft evening, and everyone will be able to have a go. We’ll be folding napkins (supplied) then also making something for which we each need to bring our own, scissors, ruler and pencil. The competition will be the best hand made item of the evening.

WENTWORTH AND HARLEY MOTHERS’ UNION
Carmen Franklin gave us a very interesting talk about racial justice. Carmen, a black South African had suffered prejudice when she visited South Africa after the release of Nelson Mandela from Prison. She also brought to our attention an article she had read in the ‘Metro’ paper that day about a white family refusing to be served by someone who was black even though he had been a waiter at the hotel for 17 years. We all found this quite distressing to know that some people are still treated like this even though we live in a multi-cultural society. We all sang the chorus ‘Let there be peace shared among us’ which summed up the message that Carmen was bringing to us.
There will be a Wath Mothers’ Union Deanery garden party at Swinton Vicarage lawn on Wednesday June 23, starting at 1.30pm. As we are part of the Wath deanery I hope that as many people will make an effort to attend. Our Branch is holding a ‘£1’ stall, please let me or Ruth have any donations for this (items must be worth at least £1) ASAP so that they can be wrapped, also if you have any spare wrapping paper this would be appreciated. Thank you.
At our next meeting on Friday June 25, we will be visited by our new Diocesan president Sarah Rogerson. This is an ideal time to find out more about the Mothers’ Union, so please come and join us; we meet at 7.30pm in the vestry at Harley Church.

HOLY TRINITY LADIES GROUP
For our meeting at the beginning of May the Holy Trinity Ladies met for afternoon tea in the new Walled Garden restaurant in the Garden Centre. The staff there had beautifully set out a long table for us, by a window, with an arrangement of flowers in the centre. When we arrived they brought cake stands set out with sandwiches, cream scones and delicious cakes. The staff were really helpful, bringing refills of tea and coffee, checking we had all we wanted, and giving us each a bag of cakes to bring home. We were able to sit and talk as long as we liked in a beautiful setting, and we are grateful to them for giving us such an enjoyable afternoon.
For our next meeting on Wednesday 2nd June our speaker will be Mr David Banham. He will be telling us about his time working to arrange visits and tours by Her Majesty the Queen. Anyone who would like to join us for this talk will be most welcome. Mr Banham gives his talks to raise funds for his church, St Mary’s Ecclesfield, so everyone is asked to pay £1. In addition, from now on each group using the Mechanics Institute will be asked to pay some rent. So in future members of the Trinity Ladies group will be asked to pay £1 towards the cost of renting the room we use.

Down in the mouth? Come in for a faith lift
A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. ‘If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, ’Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’ Kevin turned to his younger brother and said’ Ryan , you be Jesus !’
